Can you remember as a child, what you wanted to be when you grew up? I wanted to be a newscaster, so I would be the first person to know what was going on. I wanted to travel to strange far away places, climb mountain peaks, speak French and order room service in a fancy hotel. I never once held a fear that this might actually come true.
As children, our dreams never scare us. As an adult, we say if our dreams don't scare us, they're not big enough. But often a fear of success can be more debilitating that a fear of failure. It can be easier for us to stay in the safe comfort of failure, knowing how that feels, with no risk of disappointment. Self-sabotage creeps in and keeps us 'safe' and playing small. Sound familiar?
As the great author Marianne Williamson says, it's our fear of what we may become, rather than not become, that holds us back. If this sounds familiar to you, here's four strategies to stop this fear of success in its tracks.
1. Feel it and Believe it
Visualize and believe in your desired outcome, your success in all it's glory. Really see and feel how this will impact your life, your family and your friends. Are you comfortable here? The more familiar you are in these surrounding the stronger your self-belief will become.
2. Manage your Money Blocks
Take a look at your desired financial goals and what your desired success will bring. Are you attracting this milestone or blocking it with your limiting beliefs? Be prepared to break through some barriers as you enter new income levels.
3. Flip the Negative Talk
When self-sabotage strikes, it's important that you have a practice or technique to help you flip it around. Try asking yourself what a mentor or successful person who is where you want to be, would do in your situation. Or simply ask yourself 'Is this thought or action taking me closer to where I want to go?'
4. Enjoy the Ride
Stop chasing the horizon. Your vision is there to inspire you but it's not meant to keep you from missing the moment. The here and now. Celebrate the small wins and look at how far you've come.
Whether it's financial gain, recognition, accomplishment, freedom, whatever, it evolves and grows with us. And it seems, as we get older, success transitions from external validation to include internal measurements. Outwardly successful and inwardly fulfilled.
The success goalposts move over time as we realise that success does not stand still. So what does it look like for you? If you haven't already, implement some of these strategies and start creating your own version of success.
